I remember the soft pretzels from a vendor outside of Alexander's Dept store in Queens. I remember my mother didn't have a car and would get there by bus. She lived in Flushing, Queens.
I actually forgot what NYC MTA buses looked like back then until I saw it in the photo.
Now, maybe you can refresh my memory..... there was some big department store right off the LIE on the south side (so the eastbound side of the Expressway). I would swear it was Alexanders, or maybe A&S, but I can't recall a mall being near the LIE between Garden City and Westbury at the same time. (I know it's a huge span; its been 20 years since I've been back to the Island.)
I have been craving it forever and I searched Florida for that white "tart" and I found it to the best of my ability, gone now though. But it will never be like what you described, with the fresh fruit on top in a random diner-like setting.....a reward after a LONG day of shopping with Mamí. Thanks for the extra memory details!
Loved reading this. I also. Loved the frozen yogurt. Nice memory. Love mom
