Your Food Guide to Super Bowl LIX
Plus thoughts on removing "End Racism," the joy of Fritos, and more.
The Big Game is Sunday, and while I’d prefer that they’d kept the “End Racism” in the endzones, obviously you know that had to be removed because of the presence of our President, whose goal is the opposite. That messaging doesn’t vibe with his masculine kind of energy.
Anyway, I’m trying to ignore his menacing presence at the game, and his destruction of our government, trans kids’ lives, immigrant’s lives, the coral reefs, basic science, and lean into the food, drinks and the ads. I’m looking forward to seeing the Harry Met Sally Katz’s Deli ad, and the next iteration of the Dunkin ad with Affleck and Damon, as well as the “Other David.”
I’ll be spending the day on Sunday making Melissa Clark’s Short Rib Chili . It’s technically a recipe for nachos, but I do it as chili with sides of guac and chips so it doesn’t get soggy. Also instead of tortilla chips, I serve it with Fritos. I LOVE FRITOS. They are my favorite forbidden childhood snack. And according to Michael Pollan’s math, since they are made with only three ingredients, they are a health food. So, there’s that.
Now, if you don’t want to cook for Taylor and Travis’s big day, I’ve got all kinds of options to order for pick up — from a Southern fried chicken feast, to a taco party, and a pizza versus wings showdown. Here’s to love and football.
Southern Style at Gus’s
Chef Chris McDade is going the Southern route over at Gus’s. His spread feeds four ($165) and includes a whole fried chicken, sides of slaw, potato salad, charred broccoli salad with green goddess, as well as pimento cheese and fried saltines, Hawaiian rolls, and chocolate chip cookies. Add Mezcal Margs for $45. Order by Friday by emailing email megan@gusbrooklyn.com
Tacos and Margs from Alta Calidad
If you’re looking for a Mexican vibe, Chef Akhtar Nawab is doing taco platters to go over at Alta Calidad (pick up only). Their party platter serves four ($90) and includes Guacamole, Spinach Queso Fundido, Tortilla Chips + Salsa to snack on during the commercials, and an array of 12 tacos for the touchdown dances. Choose your assortment from beef picadillo, carnitas, chicken tinga, and mushroom. For dessert there are churros dusted in cinnamon sugar. Add on margs if you like! Order here.
Wings and Pizza from Emily Brooklyn
EMILY BROOKLYN is doing their signature gochujang wings for takeout at special pricing on Sunday: a dozen wings for $32; two dozen wings for $60. Add ½ trays of Caesar salad ($40) and pizzas to their order, as well as margaritas and sparkling punch ($15 per cocktail). Pick up on Sunday 2/9 starts at 12pm. Order by end of day Friday, February 7th by emailing amanda@emilybrooklyn.com (Please note desired pickup time when placing order.) Smaller orders can be placed online day-of! Yum.
Thanks for this, Andrea. So hard to hold everything you mentioned—I appreciate the way you always acknowledge the real and elevate the good 😘
