Ah the Brits. They know how to pass a Sunday eating and drinking. Wise folks they are. Indeed, for most folks in Britain (when they’re not watching the revolving door at 10 Downing Street), Sundays are for the pub and a Sunday Roast, a traditional British feast that dates all the way back to the reign of King Henry VII in 1485. Over the centuries the meal has remained a stalwart, a hearty feast fit for the Beefeaters: roast beef, roasted potatoes and roots, greens, and a Yorkshire pudding served to friends and family coming together after church, a few pints at the pub, or a game of rugby or footy.
When I originally planned this post, Hawksmoor was about to begin serving their famous Sunday Roast cooked by Executive Chef of the group, Matt Brown, which would have been lovely. Unfortunately, Matt ruptured his achilles (OUCH), and the team decided to postpone. On Instagram, they wrote: “We hope you can join us in wishing Matt a speedy recovery and bear with us a little longer while we arrange a launch date in the New Year, we promise it will be worth the wait.”
While we wait for Matt to get better, you could head to Tea & Sympathy or Jones Wood Foundry for your fix, but I am going to suggest that you try the Sunday Roast being served by the folks at Gus’s Chop House, the new Carroll Gardens spot from Popina owners Chris McDade and James O’Brien (read more about it in my piece in Grub Street).
Taking inspiration from the British midday feast, Gus’s all-day lunch/supper menu features a range of roasts served alongside a generous spread of seasonal vegetable sides like roasted carrots, market greens and turnovers (yes turnovers!). The rotating mains include lamb rump with mint salsa verde, pork belly with roasted apples, and beef prime rib with horseradish. There’s a lot to drink too, from fall cocktails, local beers, to gorgeous wines from the full 300-selection list.
I’ll also take this moment to plug an amazing off-the-menu special at Gus’s—a gorgeous burger served only Tuesday - Thursday, 5 pm - 6 pm, at the bar. The two-handed sandwich comes topped with pickles and cheese, with a side of crisp french fries and your choice of featured beverage: a weekly rotation a chef @alwaysanchovy-selected beer and a wine selected by our beverage team. See you at the bar!
The Sunday Roast is available Sunday only from 1-8pm. Gus’s is located at 215 Union Street, between Henry and Clinton in Carroll Gardens.
Reservations via Resy, walk-ins welcomed; indoor tables, bar seating and outdoor seating available, weather permitting.
