Friends,
This is a slow week, or maybe I just feel slow? It’s so muggy out, and my brain feels like it’s a cardboard box stuffed full of those squishy packing peanuts. I’m not functioning at a very impressive level here, but I’m kind of okay with it.
The Fourth was great; I had a front row seat to the fireworks thanks to the roofdeck at my mom’s Assisted Living overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. Let me take this opportunity to say that it’s serious fun hanging out with the over 80 set. First of all, I felt young and gorgeous, bringing the age down by about 30 years. I’ll take it. Also these ladies know how to party. (It’s mostly ladies at that stage and age.) We had a ball: lots of wine, some gummies and then the real drugs came out – Lipitor, Losartan and Allopurinol, oh my! Plus one of my mom’s friend Joan’s son is partners in Stretch Pizza so we had fresh pies from Wylie! Delish. I got to sit with my mom and hold her hand and watch the fireworks light up her face. It was perfect.
The rest of the weekend was full: I swam from sharks at Rockaway, I did my usual Firecracker 10K with NYC Runs on Governors Island; I might have gotten heat stroke but I didn’t finish last, well, almost. Yesterday was Visiting Day up at my kids camp (they are so happy there), and now I’m back at my desk and working on some stories and contemplating all the ways I can make gazpacho because I will not turn on the stove. Who’s got a favorite recipe? Share it with me in the comments please?
The great thing about slow summer weeks like these is that everyone is out of town and you can pretty much eat where you want to without too much difficulty. So this is your chance to grab a table at Kabawa, Tatiana, Crevette, Le Chêne, or even Adda! If you’re into trying something that’s just opened, pop into the East Village’s latest addition, Aquarelle. It’s a glorious seafood bar and swanky cocktail lounge with a menu that includes squid ink linguine with crab, a Champagne & Caviar experience, golden tomahawk steak, and a signature seafood tower from Le Souk’s Marcus Andrew and The Paradise Club’s Baris Koroglu. Fun!
