The Atlantic Opens Friday—Live Music Back in Brooklyn (with Bubbly!) from Smith & Vine Team
If you live in South Brooklyn, you know Patrick Watson and Michele Pravda. They're the lovable and amazing owners of Brooklyn’s beloved favorite wine and cheese emporiums, Smith & Vine, Stinky Bklyn, The JakeWalk and more. Did you know they were also musicians? Patrick is a trained opera singer and Michelle plays guitar and sings. They've always loved live music as much as food and wine. So it's fitting that they will open ,The Atlantic BKLN, a state-of-the-art live music venue with an emphasis on jazz, blues, folk, comedy, live band karaoke, and more showcasing the neighborhood’s most exciting local talent.
Located in a 3500 square foot duplex, with a pair of long and beautiful well stocked bars and a menu of small plates, The Atlantic will fill a huge void in the neighborhood for live music, one made even larger with the closing of the iconic Hank’s Saloon.
As I mentioned, Patrick trained as an opera singer, and Michele is a singer—the couple met while working at Lupa in 1999. The couple went on to open many of Brooklyn’s most beloved small businesses (The Jake Walk and Brooklyn Wine Exchange in addition to Stinky and Smith & Vine), and had been toying with the idea of opening a music venue for decades. Throughout their hospitality careers, they have always sought to incorporate music and community. Their popular Stinkfest was an annual neighborhood block party with live bands and dancing, singing, eating and drinking on the streets of Cobble Hill. The thought of bringing more music to the neighborhood was a little seed that never stopped growing.
The Atlantic will open February 11th with an exciting calendar of music and events including Aaron Burnett and the Big Machine, Lizzie and the Makers, French Cookin, and Emaline. For Valentine’s Day, the Atlantic is hosting a night of live comedy and bluegrass. Several nights of Live Band Karaoke are also on the calendar and themed karaoke nights—80s, Musical Theater, Crooners, and their own version of Loser’s Lounge, are planned for later in the Spring. To make music accessible to all, most shows will be reasonably priced at $5-$25 per show.
With Patrick and Michele’s strong background in hospitality, The Atlantic BKLN also promises to deliver much more than just great live music. Wonderful welcoming service will be a hallmark of the Atlantic, as well as its thoughtfully curated beverage program.
The wine list will be predominantly bubbles—cava, pet nat, champagne, prosecco, and more. “We wanted to do something really fun, to try to come out of this public health crisis with a sense of celebration,” he said. The cocktail list will be extensive and include some old favorites from the now-shuttered Jake Walk, including the Jake Walk, originally created by Dave Wondrich. There will be four local beers on tap as well.
The menu will focus on small plates and finger foods. Obviously platters of artisanal cheeses and charcuterie will take center stage, but there will also be local favorites like a mezze platter from Sahadi’s.
Patrick and Michele are thrilled to finally be able to bring their little seed of an idea to life. “It was always in the background, the idea of opening a music venue,” said Patrick, who has dabbled in concert production over the years. “We always flirted with the idea and laughed about it, and it wasn’t like, wow it’s COVID, let’s open a music venue, but we were approached by the landlord to open something new and we could not say no. There was nothing like this in our corner of Brooklyn anymore, until now.”
