If you love tahini, you probably already know of Soom Foods, the Philadelphia-based tahini company founded by three sisters: Amy, Jackie and Shelby Zitelman.
The idea to make tahini for a living came following the trip to Israel where they tasted the best tahini of their lives. When they came home to the U.S., it was pretty clear that there was nothing that tasted even remotely as good. And so a mission and a company was born: to bring quality tahini to the American market.
This sent them on an international journey, from Israel to Ethiopia, in search of the highest quality sesame to make their own tahini, finding seeds called white humera, loved for its nuttiness and intricate bitterness.
In 2013, they began selling their Israeli-made tahini in farmers markets, and by 2017 they had been named to Forbes’ 30 under 30 list. Soom is now the tahini of choice for iconic award winning restaurants around the country like Zahav and many more. They’ve also expanded beyond tahini in recent years with the introduction of sweet varieties, and new tahini-based snacks too. available across the country on Amazon, in Whole Foods, and many other major retailers.
Soom is proudly Jewish-Women-owned, and with the Middle East in crisis, the team has been gutted by the trauma and devastation impacting the region and the impacts to Jews and Muslims here in the US.
As a way to put their grief into action, the Soom Foods team is selling (the softest ever!) Tahini Sweatshirts with all profits being donated to The Counseling Center for Women in Israel and teaming up with “competitor" Seed & Mill who will be selling their Tahini Hat with profits going to the same organization.
As Jewish women founders and mothers this cause hit home. With every purchase of a sweatshirt from Soom we will donate all profits to the CCW to help fund therapy services to women in need. Together, we can support women facing difficulties, remind them of their strength, and empower them to overcome life's challenges. It is a great way to give back, show tahini love and a great gift for Hanukkah or Christmas!
About CCW: For over 35 years, the Counseling Center for Women (CCW) has been providing subsidized psychotherapy from a feminist perspective to women in Israel, especially to underprivileged women who cannot afford long-term therapy. The CCW supports all women, from all denominations, who face various challenges. Donations will go directly into funding emergency therapy sessions, support groups, and group therapy sessions.
