Happy Monday my friends,
Today, I’ve got some fun Monday evening events to share (including an excellent writing (with wine) workshop at The Center for Fiction), but before we get to that I wanted to share some news, well, about me!
I had a couple of exciting things happen this weekend. One was a personal breakthrough: I folded a fitted sheet. I know! You’re impressed. I am too, but it was only a twin-sized one, so don’t be too wowed. Once I got to the king-sized one, the wheels totally fell off, and I was completely lost inside miles fabric and trapped by elasticated corners. I just got out recently. Penny was concerned.
Let’s see, other than that, I started two new freelance gigs (and I’m always looking for more until I land that illusive full-time writer role).
The first is as the New York City reporter for Open Table, where I’ve done a lot of reporting but particularly excited about this piece highlighting all the fabulous women changing the restaurant industry.
I’ve also started writing for Fast Company, focusing more on the business of food (thanks to Jeff Gordinier for connecting me to an editor there!). My first story came out Saturday, and it’s about chef Akhtar Nawab and how he’s quietly revolutionizing the food hall. Check it out if you have a moment.
Other than that, I’m still looking to grow my Culinary Concierge business, so I hope you’ll keep me in mind if you, your firm, or your clients need help navigating New York City’s restaurant scene. I can help you pick (and book) the best spots for client lunches and closing dinners, choose the best venue for a celebration, or plan a week-long eating itinerary, what have you. Drop me a note and let’s chat!
Oh, and I’m also a copywriter – I’ve helped many F&B brands with their websites, marketing collateral, origin stories, and the like so if you need a refresh, hit me up!
Okay, self promotion time has now ended. Thank you for reading and enduring! And now, here are some ideas for how to spend your Monday evening. Cheers!
Center For Fictions’ Drink & Draft Night
If you’re a writer, or just feel like you want to see what happens when you put pen to paper and start to write, I love the Center for Fiction’s Drink and Draft Nights. Hosted by Josh Krigman of Little Nights, the night includes a series of photographs that lead you toward new creative choices in your work, and the chance to experiment with different styles of writing. All genres welcome, no experience necessary. I went to one last month and I loved it. It turned into the piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago called Grounds. GO!
No or Low Corkage Nights!
One White Street, the wonderful Tribeca restaurant from chef Austin Johnson, offers a $10 corkage fee on Mondays (typically $75). Last week, Michael Lomanaco eliminated Monday evening corkage fees completely at Porter House, his terrific steakhouse high above Central Park, so go eat steak and BYOB!
Eat Pasta, Baby.
One more Monday night idea. Le Fanfare, the beautiful Italian restaurant in Greenpoint from the owners of Nolita darling, Epistrophy Café, does a great Homemade Pasta Night Mondays through Wednesdays. The menu features three unique pasta specials: Pappardelle with beans and mushrooms, Tagliolini with mushrooms and parmigiano fondue, and Spaghetti with octopus, bottarga, and chives. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Great reporting!
