Friends,
I’ve just returned from a marathon trip up to camp and back, dropping the kids at sleepaway (or as Eiji calls it Stay Away Camp) and unpacking them in 100+ degree heat, which is, I suppose the way things go with summer camp. The heat of the bunks, suffocating and still, with windows doing nothing to help, just letting in more heat, not even a whisper of a breeze, just the stagnant screen coated with a tapestry of dead insects and a network of sticky cobwebs; cubbies stuffed with weeks’ worth of shorts and tees and shelves topped with spray sunscreen and cans of Deep Woods OFF! The kids marching off down the grassy path with their friends, turning for one last sweaty kiss and hug, and a “See you, love you, bye!!!” And that was that. I was dismissed, back to the car for the long drive down to Brooklyn. Parenthood.
They’ll be up in the Berkshires for the E N T I R E summer. I don’t want to say I am doing a series of happy dances, or sitting around in my pajamas drinking coffee in pin-drop silence with a huge smile on my face, or basking in the sound of nobody asking me for anything like it’s a cold waterfall on the hottest day of the year, but you know, I am. I love my kids, but I love me too.
This weekend there are so many different pop ups across the city (and out east). I’ll be taking next week off so I’ll see you after the 4th! Have a great week!
xx
