Local Roots Pop Up Farm to Table Dinner with chef Nathaniel Cox
My local CSA Local Roots opened a gorgeous little all-day cafe on Court Street a while back, and they've started a fun farm-to-table dinner series. This Caribbean-inspired dinner, to be held on March 26th with Chef Nathaniel Cox of BIG CHUNE, uses Local Roots ingredients and sounds quite good — look at it as a fun way to kick off Spring.
Nathanael Cox is a Brooklyn-born artist and cook, whose work reflects on politics of cooking and eating, and how food can be contextualized to reference and address issues, people and communities. Concerned with food’s role in the formation of identity and culture, Cox’s work explores what diets and foodways are able to describe about histories. BIG CHUNE is his popup concept which remembers and celebrates the experience of growing up in New York City, and explores the cultural and historical nuances of Caribbean cuisine.
Cox's menu includes a first course choice of either Red Cabbage Salad with citrus, soy walnut vinaigrette, savory granola; or Plantains with caramelized onion, scotch bonnet pepper, anchovy, cashews, Main course choices include Stew Chicken with fenugreek, white wine vinegar, and a "shit ton" of scallions, or the Ital Stew with local roots, chickpeas, butternut squash, coconut milk, pickled chicory.
Dinner also comes with a Local Roots sesame miso chocolate chip cookie (take some home if you can — these are the BOMB) and a special Mount Gay Run cocktail. Drink specials like the Beach, Please Shandy will be served all night as well as free samples of Avec Drinks "adult" sodas.
Dine indoors in their beautifully designed cafe or outdoors in the pink backyard. If tickets are not sold out, they will be available for purchase at the door.
