After 12 years in DUMBO, the team behind Colonie and Pips will close their Mexican restaurant, Gran Electrica. Their last service will be on New Year's Eve. They plan to keep the space and reopen with a new concept in February. News of its closure comes on the heels of the closing of Buttermilk Channel, another beloved neighborhood gem.
Co-owner Emelie Kihlstrom and the team announced the news yesterday by email to their guests, writing, “after 12 incredible years of serving you, it is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Gran Eléctrica will be closing its doors at the end of this month. This decision wasn't easy, but we're so grateful for the unforgettable memories we've created together. To all of you who've dined with us, celebrated with us, and supported us along the way - thank you. It has truly been our honor to serve this community, and we will forever cherish the connections we've made. We send extra gratitude to all of the tremendously talented staff that we've been lucky enough to work alongside all of these years.”
I chatted with Emelie today and she was hopeful and excited about creating a new concept for the neighborhood in 2025.
“It was an extremely difficult decision to close, but our numbers never bounced back after the pandemic, and we saw a particularly big dip in sales in 2024,” she said. “It has become clear that the neighborhood is ready for a new concept in the space. As sad as it is to say goodbye to Gran Electrica after 12 years, we look forward to opening in February as a French bistro with a nod to Scandinavia, in an homage to my homeland and culinary upbringing.”
