Oh man, this is heartbreaking. I moved into the neighborhood in ‘99. I can’t believe I walked by it today and didn’t notice. Things change, blah, blah, it’s still so sad.
I grew up on the bread from Caputo's — and Cammareri's bakery, for those who remember. I wish someone would swoop in and take over Caputo's like Sal did for Ferdinando's. It is too much of an institution to lose. I doubt it was financial since they wholesale and probably own the building, plus the shop was always busy with people picking up bread after work. I'd guess it is more of a legacy thing, like people aging and no one wanting to carry on the family business.
Thanks for reporting on this. I feel like one of the legs of my table just got kicked out. I’ve been going to Caputo’s for nearly 20 years for all-around seededs, ideal sandwich rolls, superb newcomers Ike the country seed bread, and the best black-and-whites anywhere. Always fresh bread, always a line on weekends, and always friendly and genuine. They were the last real bakery standing. Where are we anymore?
EDIT: the same woman has been taking care of me at Caputo’s for nearly that whole time. She always found time for a laugh. She’s part of my life. I wish the owner had at least given some notice so we could have said goodbye :(
The best! Don’t live in the neighborhood anymore but whenever I’d be nearby I’d make sure to stop in. So little like it anymore. Need to support the legends!
The Babka was out of this world. I heard it was a new baker that joined them a few years ago who made it. If anyone hears where they land and if they start making it there let me know!!
This is heartbreaking. Best Italian bread in NYC.
I’m gutted. Went there every week! I miss Red Rose too. Although wasn’t Mazzola already sold and has new owners who didn’t change anything?
Mazzola's bread is not great. I live up the block and always made the trip to Caputo's unless it was an emergency.
Heartbreaking! They had incredible Irish soda bread. Such a loss for the neighborhood!
Oh my god this is devastating news😭
I am devastated! My only go to bread place for the past 35 years! What the F? Why? They were always full of customers.
You're part of the tradition, too, Andrea. I've been reading your reviews since when they arrived by email! You're a a tie that binds.
Did they own the building?
I believe so

Sad
Where will I go each Saturday morning? For my pizza dough and almond croissant and apple cake? Heart is broken.

The new baker was excellent, bringing lots of new bread and pastry, while keeping the old standards exactly the same.
I interpret this as, "Now is the worst time to open a small business in NYC in 124 years." How did we get here?
Jesus fucking Christ
